TUNISIA

A Mediterranean resort between Algeria and Libya, Tunisia offers the traveller the choice of a modern seaside resort and ancient Roman, Berber and Arab sites. You will find a stunning coastline with wide sandy beaches, the magical Sahara desert and an abundance of historical sites. The country is divided into two by the Atlas Mountains. The northern region is famed for its extensive cork forests and fertile grasslands. In the southern region the desert area merges with the Sahara and here you will find palm oases and saline lakes.

Even though Tunisia caters mainly for beach holidays with the beautiful weather lending itself to swimming and sunbathing, there are other sights you should not miss. A desert safari can take you to the troglodyte pit-dwellings in Matmata. You could also take a camel trek from Douz, the gateway to the Sahara, for an excursion through the dunes and the nearby villages.

Tunisia has a wonderful climate. Constant sunshine and the water always warm. It can be a bit too hot in the middle of summer, but between October and May the weather is warm and pleasant. There are many sporting facilities for the traveller to enjoy including sailing, surfing and golf. A visit in spring, between March and May, will bring spectacular displays of wild flowers throughout the countryside.
